Hey, it’s Steve Hammond “The Gatekeeper”…thanks for rockin’ with me weekday afternoons from 2-7pm on Y-103!

Let’s start at the beginning, shall we? I was born on an odd minute, of an odd hour, of an odd day in an odd year. That pretty much sums it up. I was a weird kid who turned into weird adult. I didn’t say I grew up, because I never did.

As a kid, I watched, Ghoulardi, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, One Step Beyond, Dark Shadows, The Invaders, Night Gallery, The Prisoner, Tales From The Dark Side, Jonny Quest, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Houlihan & Big Chuck and The Ghoul. The weirder the show, the better I liked it. My parents hated the shows I watched but they hoped it was phase I’d grow out of. It didn’t happen.

After barely graduating from Cuyahoga Falls High School, my father told me, in no uncertain terms, that he wouldn’t waste a penny sending me to college, so I spent the next three years playing guitar in various bands and going from one lousy job to another. I made tackling dummies, washed dishes, made pizzas, cleaned toilets, worked in a factory and cleaned garbage off the lawn at Blossom after concerts.

One Saturday morning, while watching TV and nursing a massive hangover, I saw a commercial for a broadcasting school in Cleveland. I enrolled, borrowed money from Uncle Sam and the rest is history.

As the theme song from WKRP In Cincinnati said, “Town to town, up and down the dial,” and that is so very true. Over the course of my career I’ve moved….A LOT. In Ohio, I’ve worked in Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Kent, Van Wert and Youngstown. I’ve also worked in Lock Haven and Williamsport in Pennsylvania and in St. Louis, Missouri.

I’m not sure if that means I’m really good at my job, or that I’m really good at getting radio stations to hire me.

I’m also an ordained minister in the Church Of The SubGenius. My local parish is Saint Yossarian’s Of The Presumptuous Assumption and I’m available to perform weddings.
